What We Believe
The following is not intended to be an official creed of the Mountlake
Terrace Church of Christ, nor in any way an exhaustive summary of
the things that we hold to be true. Instead, it's a basic idea of
our teaching for those interested in knowing more about our basic
beliefs. We're convinced that the Bible itself is the inspired statement
of faith for Christ's Church and that anything written by us should
be measured by the Word of God.
The central focus of our faith and life is the God of the Old and
New Testaments. He is the creator of all things and sovereign ruler
of the universe (Genesis
1:1, 26-27). He has eternally existed in three distinct persons:
The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three co-exist as
the one and only God. (Matthew
28:19; 2
Corinthians 13:14) The Father sent his only Son, Jesus, to live
a sinless life on this earth and to pay for our sins by dying on
the cross in our place. Then, he was raised from death to demonstrate
the power of God over death. It is by the grace of God through Jesus
Christ that we are saved. We believe there is not other name but
Jesus by which we must be saved (Acts
4:12). This same God makes available to us his powerful and
comforting Holy Spirit.
All people must decide for themselves whether they believe the
message of Jesus and are willing to put their complete trust in
Him. Our Christian faith focuses on, and responds to, Jesus Christ
and what he has done to save us by means of His life, death, burial,
and resurrection. An integral part of our faith response is baptism
by immersion for the forgiveness of sins and to receive the Holy
Spirit (Acts
2:38). Baptism is a public declaration of one's faith in God
and the beginning point for one's newness of life in Jesus Christ.
As a church, we believe we are the body of Christ in this community.
As this body, we are dedicated to imitating Jesus collectively and
in our individual daily lives. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit
to make a difference in every area of our lives. We gather as a
church to praise God, to encourage one another, and to share the
good news of Jesus Christ!
We learn about Jesus and God's love for humanity primarily from
the Bible. We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and
is to be used for instruction, encouragement, and training (II
Timothy 3:16-17). The Bible is God's authoritative revelation
of his will for us. The Bible is our primary resource and the sole
source of God's inspired revelation of how we must live. Jesus is
our Savior and model.
Salvation
All people have sinned and as a result are separated from God and
eternally lost. To be saved is to be forgiven of sin and to receive
eternal life in heaven rather than the condemnation of hell (Luke
24:47; John
3:16-18; John
5:28-29). Salvation is a free gift from God in that it cannot
be earned or achieved through good deeds or self improvement. God
extends salvation to believers as an act of grace and mercy paid
for by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross (Romans
6:23; Ephesians
2:8-9; Hebrews
9:26-28). Salvation, which includes the forgiveness of sins
and eternal life are only available to those who trust Jesus Christ
as Savior (John
8:24).
