About the English Bible Study Center
Our
Mission
The English Bible Study Center is a community
outreach of the Mountlake Terrace Church of Christ to our ethnically
diverse, culturally rich population of North Puget Sound. The mission
of the Mountlake Terrace Church of Christ is for each member to
live out our journey of faith as a part of God’s Kingdom Story.
God’s love can transform each of us and we welcome conversations
with respect to our own experiences.
Our
Vision
The English Bible Study Center purpose
is to provide English tutoring using the Bible (God’s Kingdom
Story) with people who are new to our culture and studying English
as a second language (ESL). We achieve this objective by providing
conversational English classes taught by American teachers. We invite
you to discover this unique method of honing your English skills
and at the same time explore the timeless truths that are intertwined
with the American experience.
Free Service
There is never a charge for our classes or for the study materials
used. We invite you to attend free of charge.
Requirements/Prerequisites
The only prerequisite for the English Bible Study Center is that you have some conversational skills in English. This is
necessary so that you can understand the teachers and to be able
to participate in the class. It does not matter what your religious
convictions are or if you have no religious convictions at all.
You are welcome to attend.
The
Teachers
The teachers at the English Bible Study Center are members of the church of Christ as described in the Bible. We
teach voluntarily because of our love of God’s Kingdom and
our role in the Kingdom Story. We are not a denomination. We are
not Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, nor atheists.
We are trying to be Christians, nothing more.
Our Lead Instructor
The visionary of the English Bible Study Center is Don Bonner. Don
has been a missionary to China, as well as, Slovakia, the Czech
Republic and Latvia. Previously, he enjoyed 20+ years serving God’s
Kingdom as a minister in North Dakota. Don has a BA in Psychology
from Jamestown College with advanced training in teaching in ESL
(English as a Second Language) at Seattle University.
What
You Will Learn
Most classes will have eight or fewer students so that each person
can actively take part. The classes will focus on vocabulary, pronunciation
and both spoken and written comprehension. In a typical class, you
will have opportunity to read from the English text of your Bible
with your pronunciation monitored and corrected by the teacher.
Class discussion will focus first on the meaning and usage of words
that you don’t know from the text. You will then participate
in an open discussion of what you have read to exercise your speech
and comprehension skills. This approach will help you develop your
abilities in reading, pronunciation, vocabulary and comprehension.
Evening
Classes
Our classes are about 90 minutes in length and will meet typically
2 nights per week.
We Won’t
Tell You What To Believe
We will teach you how to study using inductive study techniques
so that you can develop the skills to understand the Bible for
yourself and come to your own conclusions.
